Claire Makelis has been the headteacher of Pomphlett Primary School since 2020. Prior to this appointment, she was the deputy headteacher, having joined the school in 2009. Over the course of her career, Claire has taught in a range of schools in Plymouth, London and in international schools, and has taught the full age range of pupils from 4-18 year olds. She has also held a number of leadership roles but particularly enjoyed being a lead literacy teacher in Plymouth, which allowed her to support other teachers in the city, share excellent practice and work collaboratively with colleagues.
As headteacher, Claire strongly believes in an intentional whole-school practice which creates a climate of welcome and belonging in school; a purposeful approach which brings everyone on board, enriches the lives of all concerned and keeps the school on a positive and upward trajectory.
